Historical arrivals in the port of Erie for June 17:

1952: American Steamship Company's STANDARD PORTLAND CEMENT arrives in ballast from Buffalo, clearing the same day with coal for Buffalo.

1982: WILLIAM R. ROESCH, which later became the DAVID Z. NORTON, DAVID Z., and currently CALUMET, arrives with stone for the Old Ore Dock.

LANSDOWNE to be moved from Buffalo by May 1; Former Erie Visitors to be renamed

LANSDOWNE, which has been languishing in Buffalo since being towed from Erie in July, 2006, wil be moved from the city of Buffalo by May 1, according to an article in today's Buffalo News. Specialty Restaurants has promised the city of Buffalo that the vessel will be moved by that date; the mayor of Buffalo has threatened to levy fines of $1,000 per day if the vessel isn't removed by then. I will continue to follow this story.

In another follow-up to a story of several weeks ago, Lower Lakes Towing and subsidiary Grand River Navigation have announced new names for three recenty purchased vesses, all of which visited Erie in 2007. The WOLVERINE, EARL W., and DAVID Z. will be renamed ROBERT S. PIERSON, MANITOWOC, and CALUMET, respectively. All three vessels are now under the new registry.

In Erie Shipbuilding news, the next deck barge under construction, Hull 109, has been named WITTE 1403 for Donjon Marine.

Carmeuse Group closes on deal to purchase O-N Minerals Erie Parent; Frequent Erie Visitor, WOLVERINE, to be reflagged

Carmeuse Lime and Stone, a Pittsburgh-based subsidiary of Belgium's Carmeuse Group, has completed purchase of the Oglebay Norton Company, the Cleveland-based parent of O-N Minerals Erie. Carmeuse announced the completion Wednesday, saying that they were planning on moving 50 Oglebay jobs from Cleveland to Pittsburgh. I have no word yet as to how this may affect the Erie operation.

WOLVERINE, a frequent Erie visitor over the years, and her sisters, EARL W. and DAVID Z., both of which are also frequent Erie visitors, have been purchased outright by Rand Logistics, whose Grand River Navigation subsidiary had been operating them under time charter from Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship Company, for $20 million dollars. Rand announced that WOLVERINE would be transferred to their Canadian subsidiary, Lower Lakes Towing, and be reflagged Canadian before the coming season. Therefore, Erie will likely see less and less of this vessel in the future.

DAVID Z. in port

DAVID Z. arrived in port with stone from Calcite at 1030 this morning, docking at the Mountfort Terminal and unloading for a short time before shifting to the Old Ore Dock to unload. The DAVID Z. departed at 1915 Wednesday evening.

DAVID Z., with stone from Meldrum Bay, Ontario, is scheduled to arrive in Erie at 0715 hours tomorrow and will dock at the Mountfort Terminal.

TRAFFIC PARADE CONTINUES

The DAVID Z. departed at 0400 this morning in ballast for Ashtabula, at the same time the MANISTEE was beginning to unload salt at the Mounfort Terminal. At 0730 this morning the USCG BRISTOL BAY and her buoy barge arrived to place the winter buoys with the lighted summer markers. They'll be in town for a couple of days.

The ADAM E. CORNELIUS is due at 1945 tonight with stone from Calcite.

Meanwhile, her fleetmate SAM LAUD, with stone from Cedarville, is due at 1045 tomorrow morning.

DAVID Z. Arrives; MANISTEE Waiting; CORNELIUS Due

The DAVID Z. arrived in Erie at 2015 this evening and went around the anchored MANISTEE before heading inbound to unload stone from Stoneport at the Mounfort Terminal. At 2100 the DAVID Z., under a long-term time-charter to Lower Lakes Transportation, informed LLT fleetmate MANISTEE that it will be a 6 hour unload, barring any problems, so the MANISTEE will be inbound at 0300 on Friday as the DAVID Z. turns in the basin and departs. The MANISTEE will be unloading salt from nearby Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Early risers should see the MANISTEE depart sometime tomorrow before 1000.

At 1830 tomorrow the ADAM E. CORNELIUS is scheduled to arrive in Erie with stone from Calcite, Michigan. This will be the seventh vessel of the young season, and will be the first three-vessel day for Erie in years, and the second multi-vessel day of the season that began less than three weeks ago.

DAVID Z. Due

Wisconsin & Michigan Steamship's DAVID Z., the former DAVID Z. NORTON of the Oglebay Norton fleet, is due in Erie tomorrow at 1915 hours. This is her first visit since August 18, 2006 and her first since being renamed this past winter. The DAVID Z. loaded in Stoneport and is the fifth vessel to call on the port of Erie in the past two weeks.
