LAUD Arrives, Unloads, and Heads for Layup; Cruise Ship GRANDE MARINER Due
SAM LAUD arrived in Erie this morning at around 0300 and backed into the Old Ore Dock to unload stone from Calcite, Michigan. The LAUD unloaded through the early morning hours and departed at 0930 this morning bound for Toledo, Ohio's CSX Coal Dock 2 for temporary layup. The vessel joins numerous American Steamship fleetmates in layup due to the economy.
Cruise ship GRANDE MARINER is due to arrive in Erie at 1300 on Friday. This is the first of three visits the MARINER and her American Canadian Caribbean Line fleetmate NIAGARA PRINCE will make to Erie this season. The NIAGARA PRINCE will arrive in Erie on July 23, and the GRANDE MARINER will return on August 18.

Weather Delays Cofferdam Installation
Today's east winds caused swells in Erie's entrance channel that have delayed the installation of the cofferdam on the PRESQUE ISLE. Crews from Erie Sand & Gravel and Lakeshore Towing will try again tomorrow morning to install the cofferdam and facilitate the beginning of repairs to the tug.

Work on PRESQUE ISLE to begin Monday
Work on sinking the cofferdam to begin working on the shaft sheals of the PRESQUE ISLE is scheduled to begin Monday. The work is expected to take about a week to complete.

PRESQUE ISLE Arrives for Repairs
PRESQUE ISLE arrived in Erie this morning at 0900 and docked at the Mountfort Terminal. The vessel is in for repairs to an ever-troublesome shaft seal and will have the cofferdam installed soon. Reportedly, PRESQUE ISLE will be here about two weeks.
Video of the PRESQUE ISLE's arrival will be posted tomorrow.

Cofferdam Emerging from PRESQUE ISLE
This morning, Lakeshore Towing began work on removing the cofferdam from the starboard stern of the PRESQUE ISLE at the Mountfort Terminal. The work is expected to take several hours to complete.
Lakeshore Towing remains busy with this and other work. On Tuesday tug DON HENRY pulled the company's 20-foot barge from the West Canal Basin to the East Canal Basin to assist with construction on the new hotel for the Bayfront Convention Center.

Cofferdam to be Removed
Tomorrow morning divers from Lakeshore Towing will slip into the chilly waters of Lake Erie and begin work on removing the cofferdam from the starboard side of the tug PRESQUE ISLE. It's likely then that the cofferdam will remain at the Mountfort Terminal until spring.

Cofferdam Installation Complete
Installation of the cofferdam on the PRESQUE ISLE's starboard side is now complete. Meanwhile, replacement of the bow thruster of CASON J. CALLAWAY has been delayed until the end of February. I will update when I know more.

COFFERDAM BEING INSTALLED
As I write this, Lakeshore Towing's skilled divers are hard at work with officials from Great Lakes Electrical Services, Great Lakes Fleet, and O-N Minerals installing the cofferdam on the starboard side of the PRESQUE ISLE. After that, Lakeshore tugs DON HENRY and FLATTOP will shift barge 401 from Wolverine Marina to the Old Ore Dock to assist in replacement of the bow thruster of the CASON J. CALLAWAY. This will require them to break the ice on the bay, so if you're thinking of going out ice fishing on the city side of the bay, forget it.

Installation work begins at 0730 Monday.

Cofferdam Installation Set
Tomorrow morning Lakeshore Towing's divers will enter the frigid waters of Presque Isle Bay and install the cofferdam on the starboard side of the PRESQUE ISLE. The cofferdam will remain there for the rest of the winter as the vessel undergoes repairs.

ANOTHER VESSEL ARRIVES FOR LAYUP
Bay ice is unsafe for ice fishermen this afternoon after another vessel arrived for layup last night. The MICHIPICOTEN, after unloading iron ore in Nanticoke, Ontario, sailed across the lake and arrived in Erie last night for winter layup. The steamer is the first member of the Lower Lakes Towing/Grand River Navigation fleet to ever spend a winter in Erie.
MICHIPICOTEN broke through ice a couple of inches thick and slowly made her way through the channel and Presque Isle Bay to the West Slip. This morning the crew was hard at work, pumping ballast off and performing other tasks necessary before they can leave the vessel for the winter. Over the coming winter crews from Erie Shipbuilding will be performing work on the MICHIPICOTEN.
The MICHIPICOTEN's arrival is the vessel's second visit to the port under that name, with the first having been last June. The vessel has wintered in Erie before, however. During the winter of 1994/95, as Interlake Steamship's ELTON HOYT II, the vessel spent part of the winter at the Sassafras Street Dock (now the site of the Bayfront Convention Center) before going into drydock during March. Thanks probably to the weak American dollar, the Nanticoke, Ontario-registered MICHIPICOTEN is also the first Canadian vessel to spend the winter in Erie since the LOUIS R. DESMARAIS spent the winter of 1997/98 at Metro Machine.
Meanwhile, within Erie Shipbuilding, work continues on the KAREN ANDRIE and A-397. East of there, crews from Great Lakes Electrical Services, Erie Shipbuilding and O-N Minerals are hard at work on the Steamer CASON J. CALLAWAY and tug/barge PRESQUE ISLE. Lakeshore Towing's skilled professionals are tentatively scheduled to join them on Saturday, when they sink the cofferdam under the starboard side of the PRESQUE ISLE, exposing the vessel's starboard propeller and rudder for work. Cranes at the Mountfort Terminal will drop Lakeshore's barge 502 into the water to serve as the dive platform for that work.
Lakeshore's barge 401 will also be busy later this winter. Lakeshore Towing in December purchased a CAT excavator and mounted it on 401, and will be using that to replace the bow thruster on the CALLAWAY.

PRESQUE ISLE Arrives for Repairs; BUFFALO Due
After spending last night unloading approximately 50,000 tons of taconite pellets in Conneaut, the PRESQUE ISLE departed at approximately 0500 and headed east, rather than the normal westbound course for the head of the lakes. At 0736 this morning, PRESQUE ISLE gave a 30-minute security call inbound Erie to the Mountfort Terminal. Entering the entrance channel at 0815, the integrated tug-barge unit slowly entered the harbor and docked at the Mountfort Terminal, coming alongside and securing at 0915.
Later today, the cofferdam built last winter by Erie Shipbuilding and used for repair work on the port propeller and rudder last winter, will be flooded and inserted underneath the tug to facilitate repairs for the ever-troublesome engines on the tug.
As the unit is expected, at this time, in Duluth to unload limestone from Cedarville at DM&IR at approximately 1500 on Thursday, August 23, it is likely that they will depart sometime Sunday or early Monday.

PRESQUE ISLE--Updated ETA
PRESQUE ISLE is now due at 0900 Friday morning. The vessel will be docking at the Mountfort Terminal, where the cofferdam used this past winter will be inserted underneath the stern of the vessel to facilitate repairs. Lakeshore Towing's tug FLATTOP and towboat DON HENRY moved the cofferdam from Erie Shipbuilding to the Mountfort Terminal at 3:45 p.m. Thursday after the structure was lifted into the water earlier this afternoon.
