Tug SEA SERVICE, Barge ENERGY 6506 Wait
This morning at 1030, tug SEA SERVICE and barge ENERGY 6506, on an upbound voyage in ballast from Hamilton, Ontario to Toledo, Ohio, anchored off of Lawrence Park. The duo, which normally carries aviation fuel on a dedicated run from Toledo to Hamilton, was still there this evening. At this time the reason for their anchoring is unknown, as they are in an odd spot to be anchored to wait for weather, as there is really no shelter where the duo is.

Biodiesel Tanker Update; VICTORY/KUBER Go Aground
The next biodiesel tanker, SONGA PEARL, is now expected to arrive in Erie on Friday, August 8. Currently the SONGA PEARL is unloading part of her cargo in Hamilton.
Tug VICTORY/barge JAMES L. KUBER, on its first trip after visiting Erie last week, ran aground Saturday morning while inbound Fairport Harbor, Ohio with stone from Stoneport. The unit was attempting to enter the harbor in a strong west wind at around 1100 Saturday when they went aground on a sandbar in about 22 feet of water. After being stuck for nearly 24 hours, the KUBER and VICTORY were freed by the Great Lakes Towing tug ILLINOIS around 1030 this afternoon and continued inbound to unload stone.

SONGA PEARL Update
SONGA PEARL, the next biodiesel tanker expected in port, is currently westbound in the St. Lawrence River bound for Hamilton, Ontario with petroleum products. After unloading in Hamilton, the 2008-built PEARL will sail for Erie, where it is currently expected on August 6 to load biodiesel.

TV'S RED GREEN MAY COME TO ERIE
For those wondering what in the world this post might have to do with the subject of this blog, please keep reading.
According to a story published on Friday, July 18 in the Hamilton Spectator, Steve Smith, star of PBS' Red Green series, recently purchased a new houseboat in Mississippi, with plans to take the vessel back to his native Hamilton, Ontario via the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. However, flood currents on the Mississippi River delayed the voyage in Kentucky, where Smith decided to have the houseboat disassembled, and, beginning July 27, trucked across several states.
The houseboat's final destination via truck is Erie, Pennsylvania, meaning Smith will likely get to Erie with the boat. Here in Erie, the houseboat will be reassembled, placed in the water, and sailed down the Welland Canal sometime in August.

High winds delay unloading of DAVIKEN
Unloading of the DAVIKEN, which began at 0700 this morning, was delayed later Tuesday due to high winds. The dock crews will try again on Wednesday to unload the vessel so she can depart for Windsor, Ontario.
DAVIKEN is loaded with about 23,500 tons of steel products and project cargo on this inland voyage, about 700 of which will be deposited at the Mountfort Terminal. This cargo, bound for the Accuride plant in Erie, consists of press parts manufactured by Schuler SMG in Waghäusel, Germany and loaded onto the DAVIKEN in Antwerp, Belgium as part of Fednav's FALLine (Federal Atlantic Lakes Line) Service to the Great Lakes. This cargo represents part of Accuride's $25 million investment in its aluminum wheel business.
Erie is not a regularly scheduled stop for the Fednav vessels, so this call is an unusual one for the DAVIKEN.
Of note, the DAVIKEN's near-sistership and fleetmate SANDVIKEN visited Erie twice in 1992 while named PETKA. On her first visit that year, July 29, 1992, the PETKA ran aground in Presque Isle Bay while turning to dock at the Codan Corporation (now the Mountfort Terminal).
The DAVIKEN, ironically enough, arrived in Erie 15 years later, to the day, she arrived as MALINSKA. Her last visit came November 26, 1992 when MALINSKA docked at Codan.
Fednav's FALLine is quickly wrapping up its 48th season of Great Lakes service with the scheduled November 30 sailing of the FEDERAL WESER from Bremen, Germany for Hamilton, Ontario with nearly 21,000 tons of steel products.
