Both of the vessels scheduled to spend the winter in Erie, the EDGAR B. SPEER and PRESQUE ISLE, are on their last trips of the season before laying up in Erie. The PRESQUE ISLE is due into Two Harbors, Minnesota at 1600 hours on Friday to load taconite pellets for Conneaut, where the vessel is scheduled to arrive on the 12th at noon. That should put the vessel in Erie, assuming no delays, sometime on Wednesday, January 13.
EDGAR B. SPEER, meanwhile, is due in Superior to load taconite for Conneaut on Friday evening, which will reportedly put the vessel in Conneaut next Thursday and in Erie on Friday or Saturday. All of these times are subject to change and likely will, depending on ice and weather. Last year both the PRESQUE ISLE and ROGER BLOUGH were delayed for nearly two days due to adverse weather conditions and ice.

Layup Update
Both of the Great Lakes Fleet vessels due to winter in Erie, the CASON J. CALLAWAY and PRESQUE ISLE, should be arriving on January 17. The PRESQUE ISLE will spend the winter secured at the Mountfort Terminal, while the CALLAWAY will be at the Old Ore Dock.
The CALLAWAY is due for her five-year survey this winter; however it is possible that Great Lakes Fleet, the vessel's owners, will seek an extension of her drydocking survey until next winter, as the PHILIP R. CLARKE, which spent the winter in Erie last year and also received the extension, will be spending the winter at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin for drydocking.

Harbor Activity Back to Normal; PRESQUE ISLE Update
A day after strong winds delayed any activity in Erie harbor, things were back to normal on Thursday morning. Lakeshore Towing tug DON HENRY this morning moved barge 401 to the Mountfort Terminal for work. KAREN ANDRIE and A-397 remain at Erie Shipbuilding.
PRESQUE ISLE is due in Two Harbors, Minnesota Saturday at 0400 and should arrive in Conneaut, if everything goes right, at around 1800 on the 15th. That puts the vessel here likely early on Wednesday, January 16 for winter layup.

PRESQUE ISLE is unloading in Gary, Indiana and will depart this evening for Two Harbors, Minnesota, where she is due on the 12th early in the morning. That should put the vessel into Conneaut sometime on the morning of January 15th, weather permitting, and in Erie for winter layup later that day or early on the 16th.

Historical Winter Layup: 1967/68
This winter, Erie should see two or three ships spending the winter in the port. By contrast, forty winters ago, during the winter of 1967-1968, the following ships were in the port.
For winter layup: ALPENA, BETHLEHEM, HENRY J. DALTON, ARTHUR B. HOMER, LAKEWOOD, LEHIGH, NIAGARA, POINTE NOIRE, SPARROWS POINT, WALTER E. WATSON.

Fit Out Begins
The aft-end crew on the PHILIP R. CLARKE has reported to the vessel, and they are beginning to fit out. The CLARKE should be ready to sail in about two weeks.

Final Month of Layup
The final push is on as contractors prepare vessels for departure from winter layup. The after-end crew is soon to report back to the PHILIP R. CLARKE to begin fitting her out to sail, and she should be departing sometime around the 20th. Although the CLARKE had been scheduled for her five-year survey this winter, she, along with fleetmate CASON J. CALLAWAY was granted a one-year extension and will go in for survey next winter.
Meanwhile work continues on the PRESQUE ISLE in preparation for her to sail a couple of days before the Soo Locks open on March 25.

Layup Fleet Arrives
Erie's winter layup fleet is now complete with the arrival of the PHILIP R. CLARKE last night. The CLARKE is now backed in at the Old Ore Dock in almost the same position that her fleetmate, CASON J. CALLAWAY, spent the winter last year. The CLARKE will go into drydock when the GREAT LAKES TRADER is removed.

PRESQUE ISLE and CLARKE Arrive
PRESQUE ISLE arrived in Erie sometime before dawn on Monday, docking at the Mounfort Terminal for winter layup. At around 4:30 Monday afternoon, the PHILIP R. CLARKE, having spent the day cleaning out her holds while her crew performed some general maintenance before arriving at Erie Shipbuilding for the winter.

PRESQUE ISLE and CLARKE Updates
As of 4:15 this afternoon the PRESQUE ISLE was unloading taconite pellets in Conneaut and due into Erie sometime this evening. I honestly doubt, though, that she'll get into Erie before daybreak on Saturday.

PRESQUE ISLE is due in Conneaut at 0530 Friday morning and is due in Erie sometime Saturday morning for layup at the Mounfort Terminal.
After a three day loading of taconite chips in Two Harbors, Minnesota, the PHILIP R. CLARKE finally got underway at 4:30 this afternoon bound for Conneaut. She's expected there sometime on Sunday morning before laying up at Erie Shipbuilding.

Updates
PRESQUE ISLE is now due in Conneaut on Friday at 0600, and Saturday in Erie at 0200. Hopefully she'll be delayed a couple of hours, or wait until daylight to enter. PHILIP R. CLARKE is due out of Two Harbors (she's taking a long load because she's loading taconite chips, which are generally a hard cargo to handle) sometime early Thursday morning and should arrive in Conneaut early Sunday morning, which may put her here during daylight Sunday, or if not, probably around daybreak on Monday.

The tug/barge unit JOYCE L. VANENKEVORT/GREAT LAKES TRADER was moved into drydock at 0700 on the 3rd for unspecified repairs.
CASON J. CALLAWAY, which had been rumored to be wintering in Erie this year, is now headed for Fraser Shipyard in Superior, Wisconsin for the winter.
However, 1973 Erie-built integrated tug/barge PRESQUE ISLE is, as of this writing, loading taconite pellets in Two Harbors, Minnesota for the port of Conneaut, Ohio, right across the state line. After that she's supposed to be heading for Erie's Mounfort Terminal, probably sometime Friday morning, for layup. This will be the third winter in the past four years that the vessel has spent in Erie.
Due for its five year survey this year, and rumored, according to an Erie Shipbuilding employee, to be spending the winter here, is another of the thirteen thousand footers in operation on the Great Lakes, Interlake Steamship's JAMES R. BARKER. The BARKER has wintered here several times in the past, notably the winters of 1991, 1992, 1999, and 2000. She's due in Duluth on Friday to load 53,000 tons of taconite pellets for Nanticoke, Ontario, right across Lake Erie from Erie. For her survey she will need to be drydocked, and only two shipyards on the Great Lakes--Erie Shipbuilding and Bay Shipbuilding (Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin) can accomodate 1000 foot vessels.

GREAT LAKES TRADER arrives
VanEnkevort Tug & Barge's tug/barge duo JOYCE L. VANENKEVORT/GREAT LAKES TRADER unloaded stone from Stoneport, Michigan in Fairport Harbor, Ohio today. After unloading the pair sailed for Erie Shipbuilding, arriving in Erie at 8:00 p.m. today and tying up at the West Slip for winter layup.
In the morning the VANENKEVORT will back the barge out of the West Slip and move it into the Erie Shipbuilding drydock for repairs.

More Layup News
Contrary to popular belief, sources have told me that the RESERVE has three more trips down Lake Michigan and will winter in Sturgeon Bay this season. It had been widely believed that she would be wintering in Erie since her owner KK Integrated Logistics is also a partner in Erie Shipbuilding.
There's a good possibility that the CALLAWAY will be laying up in Erie; she, along with her Great Lakes Fleet fleetmates JOHN G. MUNSON and PHILIP R. CLARKE are all due for their five-year surveys this year.

Next Destinations
ADAM E. CORNELIUS departed Erie around 5:30 p.m. Christmas Eve, bound for Superior to load iron ore.
MANISTEE departed Erie at 12:30 Christmas Morning bound for Wharf 12 of the Welland Canal. Wharf 12, the Port Colborne Stone Dock, is where MANISTEE will spend the winter.
