BELUGA ENDURANCE Arrives

BELUGA ENDURANCE is now in port and docked at the Mountfort Terminal. USCGC HOLLYHOCK is also in port, offloading buoys.

A full report, with photos and video, will appear later today.

BELUGA ENDURANCE, HOLLYHOCK DUE

BELUGA ENDURANCE is currently off of Erie; no word yet on when the vessel is heading in, but it seems as though it may be after daylight after all.

HOLLYHOCK is at anchor off of Erie and will be lifting anchor and getting underway inbound to Coast Guard Station Erie at around 0800. There the vessel will offload some buoys before heading out into the channel to replace buoys 1 and 5 with the winter ice markers. The HOLLYHOCK hopes to be underway and out of Erie by noon.

The pilot on the BELUGA ENDURANCE told the HOLLYHOCK's officer-on-duty that he would see the HOLLYHOCK inside the harbor, which indicates that the HOLLYHOCK may head in before the ENDURANCE does.

BELUGA ENDURANCE ETA

BELUGA ENDURANCE is currently downbound in the St. Clair River. Assuming the vessel has no delays en route, the current ETA for the ENDURANCE is 0400 on Sunday in Erie.

BELUGA ENDURANCE Update

BELUGA ENDURANCE was downbound at the Soo Locks this morning. That currently puts the vessel in Erie sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning; this time of year, however, delays are quite possible due to ice conditions and availability of pilots, both of which are quite iffy this time of year. I will update tomorrow with a more firm ETA.

BELUGA ENDURANCE is one of a fleet of nearly seventy vessels, most of which follow this same basic design. Most of the fleet's vessels are 453 feet long and 69 feet wide. Each is equipped with two cranes, which is where the vessels vary; some are equipped, as the ENDURANCE is, with two cranes of 120-metric tonnes each, giving them a 240 MT lift capacity.

Others are equipped with cranes with 150 MT capacity each.

BELUGA ENDURANCE is part of the E-240 class of Beluga's fleet. In this class there are nine ships, including BELUGA ENDURANCE's sistership BELUGA ENDEAVOUR, which also has visited the Great Lakes this season. Twelve members of Beluga's fleet have traded onto the Great Lakes this season. A typical trip for the ships is to bring windmill components into the Great Lakes and leave with grain products or heavy lift cargo. Some, such as BELUGA ENDURANCE, leave with both.

BELUGA ENDURANCE was built in 2005 as a cooperation of Volharding Shipyards in The Netherlands and several Chinese shipyards. The vessel has visited the lakes several times since its launch. On this trip it brought windmill components from overseas and delivered them to Duluth, Minnesota before proceeding to Thunder Bay to load wheat prior to proceeding to Erie to load locomotives.

BELUGA FAMILY is a near-sister to the ENDURANCE. The only difference is that BELUGA FAMILY has two cranes of 150-MT each. FAMILY is shown here while downbound in the Welland Canal at Port Colborne, Ontario on November 7, 2010.

BELUGA ENDURANCE DUE

Heavy lift/general cargo vessel BELUGA ENDURANCE, already loaded with wheat from Thunder Bay, is expected in Erie this weekend to load locomotives. I will update when I have a better ETA for the vessel.

This will be the first time a ship from the Beluga fleet will visit Erie. The BELUGA ENDURANCE is a sistership to the SEDNA DESGAGNÉS, which visited Erie in August of 2009.

NORDIC STOCKHOLM Arrives

The 2007-built, Norwegian-registered chemical tanker NORDIC STOCKHOLM arrived in Erie this morning at 0730 to load biodiesel. This is the load that CLIPPER LOYALTY was supposed to take out of port last week.

The NORDIC STOCKHOLM arrived in ballast from Mississauga, Ontario, easily breaking through ice in the channel, and docked port-side to, with the bow of the vessel facing into Erie harbor, at the Mountfort Terminal. This is the first time a biodiesel tanker has loaded while facing inbound.

When NORDIC STOCKHOLM departs, likely sometime tomorrow, the vessel will be bound for Sarnia, Ontario to load before heading overseas.

Five locomotives from GE now sit on the south track at the Mountfort Terminal awaiting shipment.

Archive Photos I: CAPT. HENRY JACKMAN

As the season winds down, I will be posting photos taken before the founding of the Erie Shipping News. This will continue throughout the winter months.

The following photos show the CAPT. HENRY JACKMAN inbound Erie on August 22, 2005 at 0830. This was, to the best of my knowledge, the JACKMAN's first visit ever to the port of Erie. The JACKMAN would visit again on December 23 that year, and has not returned since. On this trip the vessel had a cargo of stone from Bruce Mines and Thessalon, Ontario.

Locomotives to be shipped from Port of Erie?

According to reports among local raifans, GE is scheduled to ship locomotives out of the port of Erie before the season ends.

Four PH37ACmi diesel-electric locomotives built for Freightliner, a railroad company in the United Kingdom, are reportedly scheduled to be shipped out of the port. These locomotives, number 70008-70011, are numbers seven through 10 of a 30 locomotive order. The first locomotives were shipped out of an east coast port last year.

When this occurs this will be the first order of locomotives shipped from Erie since 2006.

CSX has now moved all of the biodiesel cars off of the Mountfort Terminal after the failed loading of the CLIPPER LOYALTY earlier this week.

In other railroad-related harbor news, the new siding into Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair appears to be nearly complete, but there is no word as of yet when the company might receive its first rail shipment.

The tug KEN BOOTHE SR. is tentatively scheduled to be moved out of the drydock at Donjon on December 17. I will follow this story as it develops.

LOYALTY Departs

CLIPPER LOYALTY departed Erie at 1530 today bound for Hamilton. There the LOYALTY will top off her load of aviation fuel before heading overseas. The vessel did not load in Erie and it is unknown what will become of the biodiesel load the vessel was supposed to take from the port.

CLIPPER LOYALTY Video

Below is video of the CLIPPER LOYALTY as it slowly makes its way into Erie on Sunday.

I will update if I hear of a departure time for the LOYALTY. Check back to the Erie Shipping News for updates.

CLIPPER LOYALTY Remains

As of today, CLIPPER LOYALTY remains in port. Two things - lack of pilots and bad weather - are to blame for the delay in leaving. It is unknown at this time when the LOYALTY will get underway.

It is also unknown at this time what will become of the biodiesel shipment the CLIPPER LOYALTY was to load. Whether or not another tanker comes for that or the shipment is sent via rail to the east coast and loaded at a port there remains to be seen.

CLIPPER LOYALTY TO LEAVE WITHOUT LOADING

At this time a crew from Lakeshore Towing is removing the oil-containment boom around the CLIPPER LOYALTY. The LOYALTY will be departing at around 1700 today without loading biodiesel, due to shoaling in Erie harbor.

It is unknown at this time if or when another tanker may be coming to take this load out of the port.

CLIPPER LOYALTY in port, but not loading

Lakeshore Towing Services put the oil-containment boom around the CLIPPER LOYALTY as the vessel was tying up at 1700 last night; however, as of this morning loading has still not begun on the tanker, which is in port to load a partial cargo of biodiesel.

The LOYALTY came in slowly last night due to a shoal that has formed near Buoys 3 & 4 in the channel which reduces depth to between 23 and 24 feet. CLIPPER LOYALTY was drawing nearly 23 feet of water as it entered the harbor last night and needed to be careful around the shoal, particularly since water levels are low at the present time.

What this means, however, is that the LOYALTY, which came from Hamilton, Ontario rather than simply head out the St. Lawrence Seaway after loading there, may end up departing without loading any biodiesel, or with only part of the cargo of biodiesel that it came to load. Since the cargo it was to load is small, it is likely that the vessel will depart without loading any and another tanker may end up loading this cargo in the near future.

CLIPPER LOYALTY has a pilot called for a 1700 departure this afternoon, but the vessel may depart later than that depending on whether or not the ship does load any biodiesel. That decision has not yet been made.

Erie Harbor has not been dredged in that area since 1998 and will apparently be due for dredging soon, as the LOYALTY is not the first vessel to be affected by this shoaling. MISSISSAGI was affected by the shoaling earlier this season when it delivered sand to the North Pier; in fact, MISSISSAGI temporarily touched bottom there.

CLIPPER LOYALTY Arrives

CLIPPER LOYALTY spent about six and one-half hours this morning anchored off of Port Colborne, Ontario awaiting a lake pilot and finally got underway at 1120 hours this morning. LOYALTY arrived off of Erie at 1530 and slowly proceeded through the channel before turning in the harbor and docking at the Mountfort Terminal at 1630. Biodiesel loading was to begin sometime this evening.

LOYALTY arrived in port drawing about 7 meters (23 feet) of water. The vessel is partially loaded already with jet fuel from Hamilton, Ontario and will probably not be in port very long. The LOYALTY will likely be here 24 hours or less.

This is the CLIPPER LOYALTY's second visit to Erie to load biodiesel (the first was in August 2009) and is the first load of biodiesel to leave the port this season. CLIPPER LOYALTY is the only tanker to have visited Erie twice to load biodiesel.

This is also the first biodiesel tanker to arrive in Erie since November 27, 2009, when HARBOUR CLOUD arrived in ballast.
