The first real fall gale is upon the Great Lakes and most vessels on the Lakes have been delayed because of it.
At this time, traffic in the Welland Canal is stopped with the ALGOMA DISCOVERY anchored off of Port Weller in Lake Ontario waiting to head upbound and will soon be joined by saltie TRACER and STEPHEN B. ROMAN. Saltie ZEUS is anchored off of Port Colborne waiting to head downbound. Tug EVANS McKEIL and barge METIS are secured at a wharf in the Canal waiting for the wind to moderate.
On Lake Erie, the ALGOSOO departed anchorage behind Long Point Bay last night and headed across the lake bound for Toledo. No doubt that the vessel is having a rough ride out there.
On the west end of the Lake, the ALGOWAY and AMERICAN REPUBLIC are anchored off of Huron, Ohio, along with the CEDARGLEN. The REPUBLIC is headed for Cleveland; the ALGOWAY is headed to Lorain and the CEDARGLEN is headed for Toledo. Further west on the lake, the JOHN J. BOLAND, ARTHUR M. ANDERSON, CANADIAN TRANSFER and CSL NIAGARA are at anchor.
The situation isn't any better further north. Just north of Port Huron, Michigan, seven vessels are at anchor: ALGOWOOD, ALGOSAR, CANADIAN OLYMPIC, CANADIAN PROGRESS, MAUMEE, SAM LAUD and JOHN B. AIRD. In the Straits of Mackinac, many vessels are at anchor: PHILIP R. CLARKE, ALGOMARINE, JOYCE L. VANENKEVORT, ROBERT S. PIERSON, ALPENA and SAMUEL de CHAMPLAIN. Just north of there in the St. Mary's River, KAREN ANDRIE, ALGORAIL, LEE A TREGURTHA, MICHIPICOTEN, AMERICAN MARINER, BUFFALO, FRONTENAC, KAYE E. BARKER and saltie PALAU are anchored below the Soo Locks. Above the Locks, the BURNS HARBOR, ST. CLAIR and CSL LAURENTIEN are at anchor.
Finally, in the twin ports of Duluth/Superior, ALGOLAKE, FIVELBORG, STEFANIA I, CASON J. CALLAWAY, MESABI MINER, JOSEPH L. BLOCK and JOHN G. MUNSON are delayed by weather, while the EDGAR B. SPEER remains anchored off the ports unable to make the port of Two Harbors to load.
