WITTE 1406 and WITTE 1407 were towed out of Erie last week by the tug SUPERIOR, bound for Cleveland. There, they met the salt-water vessel TRACER to offload parts for Alcoa, to be shipped up the Cuyahoga River. This is the second part of a shipment of press parts for Alcoa arranged by UTC Overseas, the first of which came into Erie on the FEDERAL POWER earlier this summer.
The barges were moved up the Cuyahoga River earlier this week to unload and should be returned to Erie sometime this weekend by the SUPERIOR. I will update when I learn more about their arrival.

FEDERAL POWER Arrives; H. LEE WHITE Due
FEDERAL POWER arrived in Erie this morning at 0730, turned in the bay and docked at the Mountfort Terminal to unload machinery from Brake, Germany. This is the POWER's second visit of the season to Erie; her first was on July 2, which is an incredibly fast turnaround time for a saltwater vessel to unload, reload a cargo (in the POWER's case, wheat in Duluth, Minnesota) and unload and reload cargo in Europe and return to the Great Lakes.
H. LEE WHITE, loaded with stone from Calcite, is due in Erie at 1045 hours on Thursday morning.

Great Lakes Towing's SUPERIOR Arrives and Departs; KUBER Due
Great Lakes Towing's 98-year-old tug SUPERIOR arrived in Erie early this morning and picked up deck barge WITTE 1406 at Donjon Shipbuilding and shifted the barge to the Mountfort Terminal. There the duo spent the day loading the machinery delivered by the FEDERAL POWER on July 2.
The WITTE 1406 has been chartered for this, its first cargo-carrying run, to move this machinery to the port of Cleveland, where it will be delivered to Alcoa for use in a plant upgrade that will save 800 jobs in the city of Cleveland.
The SUPERIOR departed with the WITTE 1406 in tow astern at 2015 hours this evening. They should arrive in Cleveland sometime tomorrow.
Tug VICTORY and barge JAMES L. KUBER, with stone from Cedarville, are expected in Erie at 1700 Tuesday.

FEDERAL MATANE Substituted
FEDERAL MATANE, which had been scheduled to visit Erie in mid-August, has been substituted and will be replaced with FEDERAL POWER, which will make its second visit of the season to Erie, tentatively scheduled for August 15.
Although many saltwater freighters visit Great Lakes ports more than once in a season, for any saltwater ship to visit Erie more than once in a season is extremely rare. In fact, the last time that happened was 1993 when the CLAUDIA I visited on May 13 and again on July 13.

FEDERAL POWER, with general cargo from Antwerp, Belgium, is currently holding off of Port Weller Piers at the northern end of the Welland Canal and should be arriving in Erie sometime tomorrow during the late morning or early afternoon hours. The POWER will be following the AlGOSEA up the Canal and will also meet the downbound KAMINISTIQUA, ALGOMARINE and MARITIME TRADER, which may delay the vessel. I will update when I learn more. Fednav to Call Twice on Erie this Season
As Erie Shipping News readers know, Erie is expecting two foreign visitors from the Fednav Group’s fleet this summer. FEDERAL POWER is expected on June 30 to discharge five pieces of general cargo, including two heavy lifts of 212 metric tons each. In August, fleetmate FEDERAL MATANE, or a substitute vessel, is expected to discharge a similar cargo.
These are expected to be the two visits that Fednav’s ships make this year, as Erie will not yet become a regular port of call for the Fednav FALLine team; however, Fednav does call in Erie on inducement.
A little background information on each of the vessels. FEDERAL POWER is one of six Cypriot-flagged sister ships built from 1999 through 2003 at the JiangJiang Shipyard in China. The 469-foot long, 2000-built general cargo ship is capable of carrying a little more than 17,000 tons of cargo on a saltwater draft of 9.7 meters and just over 12,000 metric tons on a Great Lakes draft of 8.0 meters. The POWER is fitted with two cranes of 45 metric tons each, and is capable of carrying 1,098 containers.
The 607-foot long FEDERAL MATANE was built in 2004 in Wenchong Shipyard in China. The vessel is capable of carrying 20,100 metric tons of cargo on a Seaway draft of 8.0 meters and 27,781 metric tons on a Seaway draft of 9.8 meters. The vessel is fitted with three cranes of 30 metric tons each.
FEDERAL POWER is currently in Sorel and is next expected in to Hamilton on the 29th or 30th, and after a day there will head for Erie.

Brig NIAGARA Update; NEAH BAY in Port; St. JOHN Update
As a follow up to the Coast Guard's dispatching of a twenty-five foot vessel to the Brig NIAGARA yesterday: apparently a crew member suffered a medical emergency and was found unconscious. The crew member is fine now.
NEAH BAY arrived in port at 1745 and docked at the north face of Dobbin's Landing.
Crews have continued work on the J.S. St. JOHN and have now painted the entire hull and the visor above the pilothouse in gray. There has been no change in stack markings yet.
And finally, FEDERAL POWER is currently in the English Channel making 15.9 knots on its way to the St. Lawrence Seaway.

J.S. St. JOHN Being Repainted; Updated FEDERAL POWER ETA, FEDERAL MATANE Also Due
Lakeshore Towing's tug DON HENRY this morning delivered Lakeshore's barge 502 to the Old Ore Dock, where the barge was used as a staging area to allow crews from Erie Sand & Gravel to repaint the J.S. St. JOHN. St. JOHN is being painted gray, a change from the Erie Sand green that she has worn.
It's not clear yet as to whether this is a new paint job or just a primer for repainting the vessel gray, but if this is the St. JOHN's new paint scheme, it means the end of a long tradition of Erie Sand's green hulls on the Great Lakes.
FEDERAL POWER is currently loading in Antwerp, Belgium and is expected in Erie on June 30.
Meanwhile, FEDERAL MATANE is scheduled to arrive in Bremen, Germany to load on July 15, and after stopping in Hamilton, Ontario will arrive in Erie on August 10. Both dates are subject to change. These are the first Fednav ships to visit Erie since 2007.

FEDERAL POWER Due
Erie will see its first foreign-flagged visitor of the 2010 season on June 17, when FEDERAL POWER arrives with project cargo from Antwerp, Belgium. This visit is part of Fednav's FALLine (Federal Atlantic Lakes Line) service, which will see the vessel also visit the ports of Sorel, PQ, Hamilton, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan.
The 145-meter (475.7 foot) long vessel is registered in Limassol, Cyprus, and was built in 2000. More information on the FEDERAL POWER can be found at Fednav's website.
