BLOUGH, PRESQUE ISLE Arrive for Layup; DEFIANCE and KEN BOOTHE SR. Visit

ROGER BLOUGH arrived in Erie on the morning of November 4 for layup at the West Slip. The vessel's layup comes 2.5 months earlier than last season's layup, when she arrived in Erie in mid-January.

DEFIANCE and ASHTABULA arrived in Erie at around 1030 Saturday morning with salt from Fairport Harbor and docked at the Mountfort Terminal. The duo passed PRESQUE ISLE, which anchored in the lake to await the ASHTABULA before laying up at the Mountfort Terminal. DEFIANCE/ASHTABULA departed Saturday evening.

PRESQUE ISLE, with assistance from tug MANITOU, arrived in Erie at 0530 Sunday morning for layup at the Mountfort Terminal. The barge's bow thruster was not working, which required tug assistance in winds said to be up to 40 knots.

KEN BOOTHE SR. and LAKES CONTENDER arrived in Erie at 2000 on Sunday night, paying the duo's second visit to Erie since being built here in 2012. The duo unloaded stone at the Old Ore Dock and departed at 0800 Monday morning.

Photos of all of this activity will be posted Wednesday.

CHEYENNE Returns FARRELL 256

I am attempting to get caught up on two months worth of photos; please bear with me.

CHEYENNE and barge FARRELL 256, after 11 days working taking soil samples off of Cleveland, returned to Erie on Wednesday afternoon. The tug and barge took soil samples for LEEDCo, which is attempting to develop an offshore wind farm off of Cleveland.

CHEYENNE enters the West Slip on August 27. The tug would depart with FARREL 256 on the evening of the 28th.

Later on the 27th, ELIZABETH ANNA, Donjon's new ship assist tug stationed in Erie, returns to her dock on the east side of the shipyard after helping CHEYENNE shift the FARREL 256 to the north side of the shipyard.

A man parasails past the ship, which had been in Erie for repairs to her starboard propeller hub.

The ship's bow thruster wasn't working properly, leading her to take tug escorts up the St. Clair and St. Marys rivers, as well as in Duluth, on her first trip out.

PRESQUE ISLE was able to spend so much time out of service for repairs due to sluggish demand for iron ore.

JOSEPH H. THOMPSON Visits; Tug ELIZABETH ANNA due

JOSEPH H. THOMPSON arrived in Erie on July 3 at 0300 with stone from Marblehead. The barge unloaded at the Old Ore Dock before departing at 1200 on a return trip to Marblehead.

Donjon Marine's small tug ELIZABETH ANNA is currently upbound somewhere in the Erie Canal system bound for Erie. The 500-HP tug will be stationed permanently at Erie as an assist vessel at the shipyard. The tug, formerly known as BEAR, was purchased from Disch Construction in 2014, along with a sister known as LITTLE BEAR. Given the light horsepower on ELIZABETH ANNA, it seems possible that LITTLE BEAR, now known as NICOLE MAIREAD, could be joining ELIZABETH ANNA in Erie at some point in the future.
