CHEYENNE, with deck barges WITTE 1402 and SUE B. in tow, departed Erie at 2330 on Friday evening. The tow is now downbound in the Welland Canal.
Tugs will be taking the rest of the barges out of Erie within the next month or two.

CHEYENNE TO TAKE TWO DECK BARGES
Port Albany Ventures' pretty canal tug CHEYENNE arrived in Erie at 0200 this morning and docked at the West Slip alongside the newly-built deck barge SUE B. The tug spent the morning preparing SUE B. for its tow to Albany before shifting to the WITTE 1402 at around 1430 today. The CHEYENNE moved WITTE 1402 backwards before taking the SUE B. in tow and turning it in the slip, mooring the barge bow-to-bow with WITTE 1402 to make them up for the tow through the Welland Canal to Oswego, NY. From Oswego the barges will be taken through the New York State Barge Canal one at a time.
After working on making up the tow, the CHEYENNE entered the drydock at Erie Shipbuilding at 1700 today and emerged a half-hour later with the newest deck barge, WITTE 1405, in tow. The WITTE 1405 is now secured alongside WITTE 1404.
CHEYENNE is scheduled to leave this weekend bound for Oswego.
CCGS SHARK departed Erie at 0815 this morning bound for Port Dover, Ontario. BUFFALO departed yesterday at 1915 bound for Calcite.

BRISTOL BAY in Port
USCG BRISTOL BAY and buoy barge CGB 12001 arrived in port this morning at 0800 and moored at Coast Guard Station Erie so the barge could load the summer buoys that have spent the winter on the North Pier after their removal last fall by the cutter HOLLYHOCK. BRISTOL BAY's crew spent the day removing the unlighted winter markers and replacing them with the summer buoys before mooring at Station Erie at 1700 to unload the winter buoys. BRISTOL BAY departed at 2100 for Dunkirk, New York.
Deck barge WITTE 1402 was shifted backwards today at Erie Shipbuilding. I'm not sure if this is to facilitate work on the WITTE 1402 or to allow tugs access to the deck barge SUE B., but with the New York State Barge Canal opening on Thursday, the newly built barges should be leaving port sometime in the near future.

WITTE 1402 Emerges from Drydock; ANDRIE and A-397 Enter; PRESQUE ISLE, CALLAWAY Update
At 0830 on a blustery, snowy morning typical of a January in Erie, Lakeshore Towing tugs FLATTOP and DON HENRY entered the flooded drydock at Erie Shipbuilding to move a new barge from the drydock. About 15 minutes later the duo slowly moved from drydock with the WITTE 1402 in tow. The last of the first six deck barges being constructed by Erie Shipbuilding was moved, unfinished, slowly into Presque Isle Bay and turned to line up for the West Slip.
A few tense moments followed as the barge was slowly moved past the KAREN ANDRIE and A-397; however the crews on FLATTOP and DON HENRY skillfully manouevered past the ANDRIE and docked the barge alongside the deck barge SUE B.
Another job successfully completed, Lakeshore Towing stood by and assisted while the KAREN ANDRIE and A-397 moved into drydock. The A-397 is in for its five-year drydocking survey and the KAREN ANDRIE is moored south of the barge in the drydock for minor repairs.
Lakeshore Towing tomorrow will be moving the cofferdam for the PRESQUE ISLE to the Mountfort Terminal. Current ETA for the PRESQUE ISLE is 0500 on Friday, with the CASON J. CALLAWAY expected for layup at 0600. Hopefully these times will get pushed back a couple of hours until daylight.

Lakeshore Towing pulls two barges from shipyard; PILGRIM bound for the cutter's torch
This morning at 1000 hours Lakeshore Towing crews, with tug FLATTOP and towboat DON HENRY, took a break from dredging the Old Ore Dock and proceeded into the drydock at Erie Shipbuilding. By 1030 the duo emerged with FLATTOP pulling and DON HENRY on the stern of the fourth of six deck barges built by the shipyard, the WITTE 1401. The barge is owned by Donjon Marine.
Lakeshore Towing crews pulled the barge to the far southern end of the West Slip, mooring it at alongside the pier with help from Erie Shipbuilding crews, then departed for the drydock. At 1130 hours FLATTOP and DON HENRY pulled deck barge SUE B. out of the drydock, mooring it alongside the WITTE 1401. The SUE B. was christened in September, however, it became the fifth of the six deck barges to emerge from the shipyard.
The final deck barge is the WITTE 1402, which will likely be completed soon.
At 0930 hours today, fishing tug BIG TONY took PILGRIM, the former fishing tug that sank under the weight of snow and ice last February, in tow from the East Canal Basin bound for Perry's Landing Marina. The PILGRIM reportedly will be lifted from the water and scrapped. A sad ending to yet another link to Erie's commercial fishing past.
