Historical: October 6
October 6, 1972: Tugs LAURENCE C. TURNER and MARYLAND arrive in Erie with the bow of the new barge under construction at Litton Industries, which had been built at Defoe Shipbuilding in Bay City, Michigan. The bow was 68 feet long and 105 feet wide and would become the PRESQUE ISLE.

Historical: Tall Ships in Erie, 2003
Over the Fourth of July weekend in 2003, Erie hosted a follow-up event to its Big Boats on the Bay held in 2000. This event was entitled "Big Boats on the Bay II: Ships at Rest in the Port of Erie" and was scheduled to feature six vessels: the U.S. Brig NIAGARA, PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II, TARANGINI, SERENDIPITY, NEIS KAH and LARINDA. NEIS KAH and LARINDA were both no-shows for this event.
Those weren't the only tall ships to visit Erie in 2003: the AMISTAD visited Erie on June 10 that year and the HMS BOUNTY, used in Marlon Brando's movie Mutiny on the Bounty visited June 27.

Historical: EDWARD M. COTTER in Erie, May 26, 2000; Miscellaneous News
Over Memorial Day Weekend in 2000, the Buffalo-based fireboat EDWARD M. COTTER visited Erie and was docked behind the Maritime Museum. Below are photos of the COTTER on that visit.

Video: JAMES NORRIS Inbound Erie, August 16, 2003
Below is video of the JAMES NORRIS making an extremely rare visit to Erie on August 16, 2003. The vessel was inbound to unload stone at the Mountfort Terminal. The NORRIS has not returned to the port since this visit.

Historical: MICHIPICOTEN in Drydock, March 2008
Below are photos of the MICHIPICOTEN in drydock at Erie Shipbuilding during March, 2008. The MICHIPICOTEN was in for propeller shaft repairs and various other work.

1985- Erie Sand's CONSUMERS POWER lays up in Erie for the last time. In May 1988 the vessel is towed overseas for scrapping.

Video: LEE A. TREGURTHA Departs Erie, March 30, 2002
The 2002 shipping season was one of the earliest openings on record for the port of Erie when Interlake Steamship Company's LEE A. TREGURTHA arrived shortly after midnight on Saturday, March 30, 2002. The vessel, loaded with stone from Stoneport, Michigan, docked at the Old Ore Dock and unloaded through the night before departing at around 0900 hours.
This was the first of two trips the TREGURTHA made to Erie that season; the vessel hasn't been back since then. This six-minute video shows the TREGURTHA unloading and passing the RICHARD REISS as it departs.

Historical: October 29, 1973
On this date in 1973, the tug PRESQUE ISLE departed the Halter Marine Services shipyard in New Orleans, LA bound for Erie where the barge that the tug would be integrated with was under construction. The tug would make her way up the St. Lawrence Seaway system before arriving in Erie on November 16.

Historical arrivals and departures for April 3:
1974: Cleveland Tankers' POLARIS arrives at the United Oil Company dock with a cargo of gasoline, becoming the first ship of the season.
1993: J.L. MAUTHE departs winter layup at Erie Marine Enterprises, bound for Superior to load wheat for Buffalo. This is the vessel's last season of operating as a steam-powered ship; MAUTHE lays up in Superior at the end of the season and is converted to the barge PATHFINDER three years later.

Historical: BUCKEYE Conversion, Part 3 of 3
Today's entry in the BUCKEYE conversion gallery takes us from July through September 2006, when the barge LEWIS J. KUBER and tug OLIVE L. MOORE departed Erie Shipbuilding on their first trip.
LEWIS J. KUBER retains the Oglebay Norton name and colors on August 2, 2006.
On August 8, the name is painted on the port side of the barge for the christening ceremony that took place the next day.
The starboard side, however, did not receive the markings for some time.
Workers perform some welding on the stern on August 9.
By the morning of August 15, the name LEWIS J. KUBER had been applied to the bow; however, the Oglebay Norton fleet logo remained.
That afternoon, the markings were painted out.
Done working, a shipyard employee is hoisted back over the barge.
Mated with tug OLIVE L. MOORE on September 9. Four days later the vessel would sail in the middle of the night.

Erie Historical: BUCKEYE Conversion, Part 2
Part 2 of the BUCKEYE Conversion gallery takes us through the beginning of July, 2006, with the BUCKEYE being moved out of drydock.

The newly reregistered LEWIS J. KUBER is assisted out of drydock by LOW BIDDGER, FLATTOP and DON HENRY on July 3, 2006.

Historical: Erie Shipbuilding's BUCKEYE Conversion, Part 1
On December 4, 2005, Erie Shipbuilding's first project arrived in Erie. The former Oglebay Norton steamer BUCKEYE arrived under tow of the OLIVE L. MOORE. The steamer, over the next nine months, would be converted to a barge at the shipyard. This photo essay will take a look at the first months of her stay in Erie.
